Provincial Tourism in Phongsaly
2012 / 2013, Phongsaly (LAO)

In a country with only few professional designers (due to a lack of design education) and limited budgets to pay for such services, it was important to empower the local staff of the Provincial Tourism Office by teaching basic graphic design skills. Thus, they are now able to make simple, promotional flyers and maps themselves and can run and update wordpress pages without the help of an expat.

Furthermore, the staff (and sometimes other local stakeholders) were involved at different stages in the ideation and making of more complex design work that aimed to establish and promote Community Based Tourism (CBT) activities in the province of Phongsaly (such as an exhibition about tea, a promotional website for the province, a communication tool for villagers…). An extensive research that included observational walks, interviews and prototyping was often the starting point for these in order to create holistic design outcomes.
